Were you aware that drowning is the number one cause of death among children? This news breaks my heart into a million pieces.
May is drowning prevention month, and I feel passionate that the more we educate our children and ourselves the less chance we have of suffering the unimaginable.
Did you know that toddlers between the ages of one and four are more likely to drown in swimming pools?
Or, kids over the age of five are more likely to drown in lakes and rivers. This seriously makes me feel sick.
May is Drowning Prevention Month
Here are some things to look for to know if someone is drowning. You may be surprised that drowning does not look like what you may have thought.
- Someone that is drowning cannot yell for help. So always be watching and standing close by.
- People drowning cannot wave for help!
- A person that is drowning's body remains upright in the water. Also, there is no evidence of that person kicking.
- The mouth sinks below the water surface and reappears when someone is drowning.
- Drowning is usually quiet.
What is the best way to prevent drowning? Education, the more we know, the less likely it will happen.
