Just about all of us are guilty of running our mouths when we should have stayed silent. I've had so many times that I thought to myself, did that actually just spew out of my mouth. Most of us feel guilty after saying it, on top of hurting other peoples feeling. I don't want to be that girl and God doesn't want you to be either. Family Christian gave me the opportunity to review this book. Keep It Shut is a book written by Karen Ehman, to help you, well keep it shut.

Time and time again our serpent tongue gets us into trouble. Keep It Shut teaches us great ways to stop our mouth from getting us someplace that we don't want to be. "Our words are powerful, and they have consequences."

"The Bible states that life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21)." This is very true, once you have hurt someone with your words, they may forgive but they don't forget.

Have you noticed that you're more patient with someone that's not a member of your family? It seems that we have tons of patience with someone that is not a member of our household, because we don't want to "make a scene". The book recommends trying to treat your family like you would a friend or acquaintance. When you do this you're not only pleasing God, but you're putting out potential drama fires.

I know I get very snippy with my kids for leaving endless messes all over the house. I hate asking multiple times for them to pick up their socks, or anything else. Each time I have to ask for the same thing to be picked up, I feel my blood boiling. Instead of screaming like a crazed mom, I need to breathe and pray.

We all have had our mouths overflow when we are out with our friends. While reading this book, I actually caught myself in overflow mode. Keep it Shut recommends actually pausing before we let the words flow from our mouth. I found out yesterday it's super hard to do, but the more you practice it, the better you will get.

The book gives some great tips on how to zip the lips. I don't want to give away all the tips, because I want you to read it for yourself. But, I want you to stop and think before you speak. You will find it's a battle. Stop and think, is what I'm saying true? Will it hurt someone's feelings? Do I have the right to share this information? Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all.

Would I recommend this book? Oh yes, I can't tell you how much I recommend this book. It's amazing! It's a book that you're going to find yourself constantly referring to. Change doesn't happen overnight. So, pray. I have been meditating on words to help me battle my sinful tongue. The back of the book gives some great bible quotes that you can cut out and tape all over your house as reminders. Remember, you must practice, pray, and meditate to see change. It's not easy, don't give up. Ask God for counsel!

I'm so proud to say that the author Karen Ehman is from Michigan. I want to invite her to my women's bible study to speak her beautiful wisdom to us. I don't know her, but I'm so proud that she is a member of Proverbs 31 Ministries. Go Karen!

This book is great for yourself, as a gift, or a bible study. I just noticed that you can even get a workbook to go with it. You can purchase the book at Family Christian by clicking here.
